LGPL: It was designed as a compromise...
The main difference between the GPL and the LGPL is that the latter can be linked to (in the case of a library, 'used by') a non-(L)GPLed program, regardless of whether it is free software or proprietary software.
  • Open-source purists can remain as "pure" as they want to.
  • Cooperation for mutual benefit will remain alive and well.
    and
  • Businesses and competitive people can compete for profits as the use of MyBB grows.

This is a wise move for MyBB and a great time to be alive!  Smile
Oh dear, I have a vision on where this thread will be turning >_>
Hasn't turned into anything since it was posted!
It's called pre-emptive commenting.

Yes, but it's a paid modification unfortunately.

...which are allowed under LGPL, so yeah!
Hehe it will give us the opportunity to fork it. Thank God for that.

Maybe this one will turn out OK, Zinga:
Why do people see any need to debate, when the answer is balance?

<balance>
Every Open Source community, no matter what license or product, benefits from some external and internal competition.
Every competitive person or group, in any field, can benefit from learning, and practicing, cooperation for mutual benefit.
</balance>

It is still a great time to be alive!  Tongue
Ultimately, this change doesn't really mean anything.  Although MyBB is currently GPL, they're not enforcing it any more than they would LGPL.  This is just formalising what they've been doing for years.
