Does anyone have a relatively large whitelist of generally "safe" websites, including hosts such as google.com, wikipedia.org, microsoft.com etc?
(yes, they could get hacked, but usually not too often)

Probably Alexa Top websites?
Somewhat, and perhaps those which aren't really "shady".
Alexa is more focused on popular sites, but some ones which aren't accessed as frequently like microsoft.com might be nice too.

1. .gov websites (but I think they are not "general" websites?)
2. Some official sports sites, like fifa.com
3. Some electronic sites, like sony.net and nokia.com
4. Some software company sites, like ea.com
5. Some entertainment industry sites, like warnerbros.com and billboard.com
6. Project hosting sites, like sourceforge.net and github.com
7. Some hardware company sites, like intel.com and amd.com
8. Food and drinks company sites, like coca-cola.com
