If condition for posts that aren't the first?

Heya, I'm trying to figure out how to create a php if conditional for posts that aren't the first in a thread but I'm having trouble with that. I assume it involves usage of MySQL but that's something I know nothing about.

Or I'd do:

if($post['pid'] != $thread['firstpost']) { // not first } else { // first }

---

But either should work.
