Yes, personally, I think it is good using the display item format for this, Yumi. So, XThreads will detects automatically whether one of the file input array contained a file or not, especially if the multiple file input field is not a required field.
I think this custom thread field is very handy for some applications that allowed users to upload more than one file/images.
For example the garage forum. Admins need to create 4 non required input file fields for that (based on the default example application).
With this, we only need to create two multiple file input fields (because it needs to be placed at the different area).
This happens to the product review application too.
And maybe for download forum that needs more than one non required file input fields for screenshots.
