Changing webserver config to use portal.php over index.php is probably the easiest.

I use MyBB as the software of two of my sites (the other two are blogs and run WordPress), and I use the portal as the home page for both. I just use the .htaccess file (but then again I have Google SEO 1.6.4) with this line at the top:

DirectoryAccess portal.php

That way whenever anyone accesses one of the two sites, they get sent straight to the portal. Plus I made the portal the home page site in the ACP.
