As I said, it will cause excessive database querying and thus, is bad programming design.
If you want it to work with the custom user formatting module, you can just pass the nameformat argument (after username, usergroup, displaygroup) to format_name

Look at the code and look at the pattern.
There will be a place which says something about format_name, followed by 'username', 'usergroup' and then 'displaygroup'.
Change the list so that it also includes 'nameformat'
