Portal subject - max characters

I have been trying to set the maximum displayed characters in a portal announcement subject using the my_strlen function from mybb. Here is my code:

It's having no result and I don't quite see why. Can anyone advise where I am going wrong?

Your code edit seems to work for me...
Only thing I could suggest is try with ordinary substr/strlen to see if that helps, if another modification isn't doing something to the subject.

Well, that's really odd. I do have some modifications on my portal, but nothing that affects that (I think). I do have the portal announcements cut off plugin, though.

I am using the Xthreads generated portal_ announcements.

Can't see anything wrong with that...

Have you tried using standard strlen/substr?
Otherwise, I'd start debugging it - try explicitly setting $announcement['subject'] to something, eg stick the line:

$announcement['subject'] = "some subject";

and see whether that has any effect at all.

Ok, this is absurd. I refreshed portal page, cleared cache - no result. I went to the FTP, opened up the portal.php file and changed my announcement subject to YO - adding an extra line and commenting out all the my_strlen stuff.

Go to the portal - boom - all my announcements are called YO. Go back to the portal php file, un-comment the lines, remove the YO and it works.

I have just signed up to CloudFlare - maybe I was on a cached version or something?

Possible. Might also be an opcode cache which didn't update for some reason.
