New Post Marker in Header

Hello, i was curious and wondering how to go about putting a off/on icon in the header.

i have followed the videos gallery tutorial and i am not showing it in the forum list on the index. instead it is located in a navigation menu at the top (just a link to Videos Section).

is there any way of indicating that new topics/replies are present by using the off/on or minion/off icons next to it?
