How to create a "sort by" field that overwrites system?

so when added to the threads, i can sort and order them, overriding or enhancing the system's

lets say i add a custom field bump_me.....it s a numerical field, 0,1,2,3 etc

when the threads are listed the sorting, or ordering of the threads should then be from this field rather than the timestamp as per normal

yes, there is a filtering system built in, how do i set it as standard view, per forum?
