I know this topic is rather old but I'm still unable to figure out how to do this even after scrounging through the usercp.php file a million times.

I can't seem to figure out how to pull a profilefield and insert it manually. As they have done here by styling and having a customized page for the edit profile page: https://postimg.org/image/rfi0dg32h/

As long as they are still in a group, you can try to "manage" it using Template Conditional or PHP in Templates / Complex Templates plugin.
You can use $profilefield['fid'] inside the usercp_profile_customfield template.
