To be fair, that's one way to do things.
If you attract business, then it's a way to gain popularity.  Ultimately, the project exists to be used - being open source is one factor, but if it attracts money, then people will contribute.

I still think you're just assuming things purely from your viewpoint.  Let's go with your assumption that it does indeed encourage people to charge for everything.  According to what I'm picking up, this attracts more and more people to do the same.  What does that do?  It increases competition.  And when competition goes up, these sorts of things start to fall apart, for similar reasons many (not all) people use MyBB in favour of paid forum systems.
